To get to Tahoe/Truckee from The Bay Area or Sacramento… Scary mountain roads?

I’m afraid of windy, high-up mountain roads (especially with ice on them in the winter).. I’ve never been to Tahoe or Truckee but want to go. What’s the best roads to take to avoid scary mountain icy roads? Or is there a best way? Please answer if you have experience!

You could enter from the north side on 80.
From either Bay Area or Sacramento I would take I-80, it is a major cross country freeway and all the Truckers use it to get over the Sierras. Most of it is 3 lanes each way, and is only bad during a snow storm. It is not really a high mountain road, you will not even notice the increase in elevation that much. And it is not real windy at all. I would carry chains just in case, as you did not say when you were going.
